For half a century, Steve Tsoukalas from Kalymnos would wake at dawn to begin his work. First, he climbed the scaffolding that “embraced” the iconic Sydney Opera House, and then he tended to the copper and bronze surfaces of the “grand and imposing lady” using Greek olive oil. At the age of 19, he left his beloved Greece to reunite with his siblings in faraway Australia. A young migrant who could never have imagined that one day he would become the seventh person to sign the historic book of one of the most famous buildings of the 20th century.
