Long before it adorned the spines of thousands of books now showcased in libraries across Greece and Australia, the name “Nikos Nomikos” first appeared scribbled on crumpled scraps of paper tucked in the pocket of a young man from Alexandria, Egypt. Experiencing the horrors of a war that robbed him of his younger brother, Nikos found solace in the arts—specifically in poetry and painting. Holding a degree as a design engineer from the Technical School of Alexandria and as a mechanical engineer from the Public Technical School of Athens, this erudite and multilingual Greek set sail for the shores of Australia in 1964. It was there, in the Antipodes, that he prospered, establishing himself as a respected Greek poet on the fifth continent.
