Twice Helen Hassapi, from Fteri in Aigialeia, tried to return to her homeland, but both times, the road led her back to distant Australia, the country that, over time, became her second home. She was just 24 when she climbed aboard the ship “Tasmania” and “lifted anchor” for foreign shores. But life on the fifth continent offered no easy path; she toiled hard for her future, working in clothing factories and workshops, toy manufacturing plants, and even petrol stations. When she returned to Greece, the hard work continued: she worked as a taxi driver and as a sales assistant for a kitchenware company. She may have returned to the country that unlocked her dreams, but Greece remained forever locked in the heart of this Greek woman.
