Helen Skolariki was born in 1948 in Kato Garouna, Corfu. As a member of a large farming family, she learnt from an early age what hard work in the fields meant. In 1967, in search of a better future, she made the momentous decision to leave the island and sail on the ship “Ellinis” to what was then the largely unknown Australia. In Melbourne she first worked in factories, but soon discovered she possessed an untapped gift: her voice. This led her to the stages and venues of the Greek community, where she sang for decades alongside renowned artists. On the fifth continent she married, built a family, and learnt to share her heart between the two homelands she cherished: Greece and Australia.
