From Kaimakli in Cyprus to distant Australia, from the fear of British rule to the avenues of a free nation, one that rewards hard work and effort… Leaving her homeland at a young age, Claire Gazis became one of the countless pillars of the Greek community in the Antipodes. She taught in afternoon Greek schools, created a rich body of literary work, collaborated with the newspaper “Neos Kosmos”, and was distinguished for her dedication and contributions to her native Cyprus. Her life overflows with memories of struggles and anxieties, encapsulating the essence of the Greek identity within the diaspora of the fifth continent in a single phrase: “To succeed, you must first toil.”
