It is difficult to fully capture the struggles and triumphs of the Greek diaspora in Australia. Difficult, but not impossible. Sotiris Hatzimanolis was born in 1954 in the lush village of Egrigoros, in northern Chios. Twenty-three years later, in July 1973, the young islander emigrated with his family to the fifth continent, where he worked hard as a blacksmith, a cleaner, and a waiter. However, life had other plans for the young man from Chios: it destined him for journalism, a path confirmed by his degree from RMIT University in Melbourne. Writing articles for “Neos Kosmos”, the newspaper founded by his fellow countryman Dimitris Gogos, Sotiris soon made his debut on the airwaves too, through Melbourne’s 3EA radio station, later known as SBS. Today, he continues his journalistic mission tirelessly, now serving as Chief Editor of “Neos Kosmos”, and dedicating his daily life to recording the story and journey of the Greek community in Australia.
